No to Igal's Phony Referendum
We want to make it crystal clear that the Warsangeli people oppose President of Somaliland's proposed referendum in the Sanaag region. Contrary to Igaal's propaganda pronouncements, there is no single Warsengeli elder who has endorsed bringing referendum ballots to the Warsengeli sultanate. The Warsegeli Sultanate is a sovereign state and our people refuse to surrender to secessionist intimidation, blandishments and bribery. We have defeated stronger and more hegemonic invaders including Sayed Mohamed Abdulla Hassan and more recently the SNM militia. We will not accept Somaliland's ballots and their fake referendum in our sacred land.
This proposed referendum is futile exercise aimed at boosting Igaal's false claim of a breakaway state. A genuine referendum can take place only when Somalis work out a framework for one nation-state.
We question the wisdom of a Referendum that might cause bloodshed and will certainly fail to bolster Somaliland. If Mr.Igaal goes forward with this phony referendum, it is certain that his administration will pay stiff political costs. Drawing battle lines in the sand of Sool and Sanaag is sheer madness. The monies Mr. Igaal is wasting on this fake referendum could have been better invested in Berbera and Hargeisa, the only two constitunucies he practically controls in his contrived state of Somaliland.
Igal like other Somaliland strategists assumed, however, that it is in his best interest to divide the Warsangeli sultanate into factions that support Puntland or Somaliland. To their dismay, the Harti people of Sanaag and Sool have refused to be divided through foreign meddling.
It is apparent that Mr. Igaal has not learned anything from the civil war he initiated in Hargeisa and Buroa in 1994 and 1995 that has consumed the lives of more than 15,000 innocent lives. That experience should have taught him that there is little hope for peace and reconciliation, when he denies taking personal responsibility for the wars he starts. Rather than starting a civil war in Sool and Sanaag, Mr. Igaal should own up to the deaths, destruction, horrors and misery he has caused in Burao and Hargeisa.
Mr. Igaal should relinquish his misplaced hubris and admit the terrible mistake he made in announcing the referendum and refrain from going forward with this misguided ballot. Genuine referendum cannot work in an environment of intimidation and might create civil war and blood shed. The people of Sanaag and Sool value peace and cooperation with all their neighbors including Somaliland but will not tolerate any impediment to their independence and territorial integrity. Be assured that we will remain true to our history and culture of fighting for our independence and sovereignty.
We wish to apprise the international community that the Warsangeli Sultanate is one of the foremost advocates and proponents of peace and reconciliation in all Somali regions. We believe in a bottom up approach to the recovery of a Somali nation-state and we will continue to oppose secession, fragmentation and the division of Somalia.
